Crab & Winkle Line. Canterbury to Whitstable Harbour. Opened in 1830. Closed in 1931. Canterbury, Blean & Tyler Hill Halt, South Street Halt, Tankerton Halt and Whitstable Harbour. One of Britains earliest public railways when it opened in 1830. The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway originally featured 3 inclined planes and a restricted height tunnel. It was rebuilt in 1846 to enable steam locomotives to work along the entire line. But only specially adapted locomotives with lowered boilers and shorter chimneys could work through the tunnel. Closure for passengers came in 1931 and for goods in 1953. In recent years. The Crab & Winkle Line Trust has worked tirelessly to reopen much of the route to Walkers and Cyclists.
