The Cinder Track. It opened in 1885. It closed in 1965. Scarborough to Whitby West Cliff. Scarborough, Scalby, Cloughton, Hayburn Wyke, Staintondale, Ravenscar, Fyling Hall, Robin Hoods Bay, Hawsker and Whitby West Cliff. After a long and drawn out construction period during which it was nearly abandoned. The scenic 21 and 3 quarter mile coastal route between Scarborough and Whitby West Cliff was finally opened in 1885. The steeply graded single track line was difficult to work and journey times between the 2 towns were painfully slow. The line became a victim of the Beeching Axe in 1965. But has since become a highly popular footpath and cycleway known as The Cinder Track.
