Pittsburgh amateur rail and history
A lone switcher parked outside Butler PA on the Bessemer Subdivision painted in the Orange and Black scheme Bessemer and Lake Erie locomotives can often be found in. Bessemer and Lake Erie began as the Shenango and Allegheny Railroad in 1869, in 1900 after years of growth it became the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad (BLE). Andrew Carnegie founded BLE to move iron ore from the Great Lakes and Ohio to the Carnegie Steel Company in Pittsburgh PA. The line has shrunk from its highest 228 miles to now only 139 as it still operates as a class 2 railroad today under the ownership of Canadian National who purchased BLE in 2004. #trainspotting #train #diesel #photo
