A Class 76. No. 26020 (No. 76020) (LNER EM1) Bo Bo 1500 Volt DC. The first locomotive was built at Doncaster in 1941. Between 1947 and 1952. It was loaned to the Netherlands Railways and acquired the name Tommy. Eventually. A further 57 locomotives were built. The untimely closure of the Woodhead Line in 1981 rendered the entire class redundant. Despite still being serviceable and in excellent condition and despite an offer being received from the Netherlands Railways to buy them political bloody mindedness prevailed and the locomotives were scrapped. 1 was saved for preservation and is seen as part of the Rainhill cavalcade in May 1980. 7 Class EM2 locomotives were also constructed to work passenger services over the Woodhead route. The class was withdrawn in 1968 and was eventually sold to the Netherlands Railways.
