Carrying The Waverley Headboard. An ex LNER Gresley A3 Class 4-6-2 No. 60099 Call Boy at that time an Edinburgh Haymarket 64B engine waits to depart from Carlisle to Edinburgh on 12th September 1957. Originating at London St Pancras. The express was originally called The Thames Forth Express. But lost its name at the outbreak of the Second World War only to be resurrected under its new name in June 1957. Plagued by delays caused largely by mining subsidence along its diagrammed route. The Waverley became a summer only working after 1964 and continued in that vein until September 1968 when it was withdrawn.
