The Tees Valley Railway Walk. It opened in 1868. It closed in 1964. Middleton in Teesdale to Barnard Castle. Middleton in Teesdale, Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Cotherstone and Barnard Castle. Built primarily to serve stone quarries along the Upper Tees Valley. The branch line to Middleton in Teesdale opened in 1868 while stone traffic kept the line busy until the 1930s. Passenger numbers were fairly minimal and even the introduction of modern Diesel Multiple Units in 1957 failed to boost traffic. Following complete closure in 1965 6 miles of the trackbed has reopened as a footpath.
