Here's a story about this Steam Locomotive. This Steam Loco is a Castle Class 4-6-0 No. 7029 Clun Castle. Towards the end of steam on the GWR. There were several specials and Clun Castle hauled the last official steam train out of London Paddington on 11th June 1965. This photograph was taken on 4th September 1965 when Clun Castle had been especially rostered to be the last steam hauled Summer Saturday Special on the Honeybourne Line. It was the IM39 12:30PM from Penzance to Wolverhampton. The engine spent the next 2 years working the Last Day of Steam Specials of which there were many due to demand. The actual last day of main line steam on the Southern Division of British Rail was Sunday 9th July 1967. Collett designed Clun Castle was built at Swindon Works in May 1950 and its last shed was Gloucester Horton Road from where it was withdrawn on 31st December 1965. It was brought for its scrap value of £2,400 in 1966 by railway preservation pioneer Patrick Whitehouse going to Clun Castle Limited for preservation. Still in good condition. It continued hauling specials until the official end of steam on British Rail. Then again from 1972 until the need for a major overhaul until 1985 when it tesumed work on the main line. At the time of writing. It is coming to the end of another overhaul.
