The NS 2100 series steam locomotive was designed by Willem Hupkes (1914) who worked as an engineer for the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-maatschappij (HSM). He would later become director of the Dutch Railways (NS). The locomotive was nicknamed "Tin Tinus" because of its distinctive rattling sound made by the coupling rods at high speeds.
