Here's a story about these Steam Locomotives These Steam Locos are Black 5 4-6-0 No. 44761 and Britannia 4-6-2 No. 70052 Firth of Tay. Newton Heath MPD in 1962 and 2 engines are in view. The first. The Stanier Black 5 No. 44761 was one of the last of the class built at Crewe Works in October 1947. It lasted almost to the end being withdrawn from Lostock Hall on 30th April 1964 and cut up at Cohens of Kettering in September 1968. The riddles designed Britannia engine No. 70052 Firth of Tay was built at Crewe Works during August 1954 and lasted until 1st April 1967 when it was withdrawn from 68A Carlisle Kingmoor and scrapped at Campbells of Airdrie in October of that year. We cannot leave it there. However as Firth of Tay was the offending locomotive in the settle rail crash on 21st January 1960. The locomotive was descending Ais Gill Summit with the Glasgow St Enoch to London St Pancras express in severe blizzard conditions. One of the connecting rods came loose seriously damaging the opposite rail as the engine went along. A goods train hauled by a Black 5 was travelling in the opposite direction and was derailed causing the goods train to collide with the side of the express which ripped out the first 3 carriages and scored the remainder. 5 people were killed and 8 more injured. One of the dead was a 23 year old man on the way to join the RAF while another an elderly man was with his wife on their way to retire in Devon.
