STATION: Farnborough Main (FNB) LINE: SWML LOCATION: Farnborough (Main) station Farnborough Road Farnborough Hampshire GU14 7NL MANAGED BY: South Western Railway NATIONAL RAIL STATION INFORMATION: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/fnb/details.html SERVED BY (CALLS): South Western Railway SERVED BY (PASSES): None MAJOR STATIONS DIRECTLY REACHABLE (if applicable): London Waterloo (WAT) FREIGHT DESCRIPTION (in my opinion as a trainspotter): Farnborough Main sees a fair amount of daily freight with daily FL and twice daily GBRf stone services, along with multiple moves per day between the major yards at Eastleigh, Hoo Junction and Tonbridge. However, the station does receive a lot of STP workings so keep an eye on RTT. COMMON TRACTION: Classes 158, 159, 444, 450, 66 LESS COMMON TRACTION: Classes 37, 73 HAVE I VISITED? Yes, a huge number of times. QUICK HISTORY: It opened with the line between London and Southampton. It was first operated by the LSWR, then by the Southern Rly, then by BR's Southern Region. Under Sectorisation all services were operated by NSE until Privatisation when it passed to SWT, opreated by Stagecoach, who held the franchise until 2017 when First & MTR took over as South Western Railway. It used to have a middle island platform and numerous sidings, however these have now been taken out. MY OVERALL OPINION: Farnborough Main is very good for the occasional spot, however it is not a station that a spotter would happily spend hours at due to the often large gaps between freight workings.
