"Wylam - the home of the father to the railways" How the railways have progressed since George Stephenson's first railway was constructed. Direct Rail Services 68003 'Astute' leads sister 68017 'Hornet' through the stunning historic station and under the original N.E.R signal box at Wylam Station, running as 0M60 Seaton-on-Tees Nuclear Powerstation to the Sellafield Nuclear Waste Disposal Facility on the Cumbrian Coast. It is unusual for the pair of locos, usually 68s or a 68/88 combination, to return light engine. Wylam Station was originally completed in 1835, as part of the first section of the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, between Hexham and Blaydon. The stunning masonry Stationmaster's House is in superb condition and adjoins the original station shelter. The original and aesthetically pleasing N.E.R suspended signalbox completed in 1897, is a brick, wood and iron construction; two brick piers on either side of the line support an iron frame of two elliptical arches braced with flat plate span the line, whilst iron beams support the wooden signal box with original sash windows and the deck to the structure. #DirectRailServices #Class68 #68003 #68017 #TyneValleyLine #Nuclear
