VL19 - not the first electric locomotive built in Soviet Union, but the first type designed there, stands as monument in #Khashuri, Republic of Georgia. Here starts the Surami pass with steep grades (reaching 30 permille as I remember), which was one of the busiest lines in pre-war USSR. It was the first 3kV electrified line on the 1520mm network. Before the electric locos become available, Fairlie and Mallet 6 coupled axle steam locos were in use on the line. #photo #train #Georgia #VL19 #Surami
