High Peak Trail. It opened in 1830. It closed between 1832 and 1877. Whaley Bridge to High Peak Junction. Whaley Bridge, Shalcross, Fernilee, Harpur Hill, Hindlow, Dowlow Halt, Hurdlow, Parsley Hay and High Peak Junction. One of the oldest and also one of the highest standard gauge railways in Britain. The 33 mile Cromford & High Peak Railway linked 2 canals crossing the exposed Peak District Plateau by way of a series of inclines at each end. The Northern Half was later rebuilt by the London & North Western Railway. But the southern half with its inclines remained in operation until closure in 1967. Since closure. Much of the railway trackbed has been reopened as a footpath and cycleway known as The High Peak Trail.
