TEP60 cab in the Riga railway museum. Maybe the most stylish soviet diesel showing the power of Kolomna works design school, being one of the last works of its head Lebedyanski who designed the majority of large soviet steam locos. Created in 1950s, when major passenger lines - even Moscow-Leningrad (St. Petersburg) - weren't electrified, it was the first specially designed passenger locomotive with icreased unit power allowing to reach 160 kmh. However, soon TEP60 leaved main lines following their intensive electrification, and their speed become undemanded. The need to increase train weight lead to pairing the locomotives. You can find some second unit controls at the driver's desk. To maintain the second unit from the leading one even some 2TEP60 connected with a walkway were tried despite being evidently uneconomical. As a durable solution TEP70-s with more powerful diesels were made, and now their lst variants are built with increased gear ratio. Need to add here that the Riga museum in general made a great imression on me, featuring by many miniatures showing different aspects of everyday railway life during interbellum. #photo #train #diesel #depot #museum
