317M leads the PTC Taitset towards Southern Cross, trundling over the original four-tracked Flinders Street Viaduct whilst K183 runs on the newer viaduct, built during the 1970s. The Flinders Street Viaduct is quite simply underappreciated and often overlooked. Being built during the late nineteenth century, the Flinders Street Viaduct provides a vital artery to Melbourne's heavy rail network, connecting every major rail line as it treads through Melbourne's outer edge of the CBD. The original four-tracked viaduct features composite steel and iron superstructure decking which carried the rail line, with bluestone and brick piers and elegantly curved beams forming the unique structure today.
