The NS 500 series were diesel locomotives used by the Dutch Railways from 1946 to 1998. Locomotives of this type were nicknamed "bakkie" or "hippel". These locs were originally developed by London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in the 1930's and made their way to the Netherlands after the Second World War.
