Here's a story about this Steam Locomotive. This Steam Loco is K1 2-6-0 No. 62041. Seen here at Darlington Bank Top banking an Ian Allan special to Darlington Works on 3rd October 1964. The engine pulling the train is 2-6-0 61994 the preserved engine The Great Marquess. This is the reason that the driver, fireman and even the guard are looking not back. But forward into the station as The Great Marquess leaves. No. 62011 is assisting its Thompson designed class member which is pulling the heavy train. The locomotive was designed by Edward Thompson and his assistant Arthur Peppercorn who became CME on Thompsons retirement and continued with the design of the K1. It was based on the earlier K4 that was introduced in 1937 and most of the class was built at the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow between 1949 and 1951 for British Rail. The class consisted in total of 76 that included 70 Class K1s, 1 Class K1/1 and 5 Class 4s. Just the first 6 were named including the preserved Great Marquess. 62041 was built in 1949 and scrapped at Drapers, Neptune Street Goods Yard in Hull in September 1967.
