The daily morning commuter shuttle from Lienz in Austria 🇦🇹 to Fortezza 🇮🇹 passes over the Fiume Isarco river on the Isarco Viaduct as the train heads to its final stop on the journey being Fortezza. An hour later the train would return towards Austria 🚂 The Fiume Isarco River Viaduct is one of the highest railway viaducts in Italy, Ponte sull'Isarco presso Fortezza, was completed in 1871 on the Ferrovia della Val Pusteria line. Originally, the single-track line was supposed to connect the Austrian East Tyrol with the capital Innsbruck. However, after World War I, the South Tyrol region was lost to Italy. Unfortunately the original bridge spans and columns did not survive to our times. The fortress visible in the background in old photos is Frezenfeste Fortress. Emperor Francis I started building the fortress in 1833. In 1838, the project was abandoned because it was considered that the area was not important enough for the fortress.
